About Emma
I have 8 years of classroom teaching and individual tutoring experience with students from kindergarten to graduate school level. I have a bachelor's degree in medical anthropology from Barnard College of Columbia University where I also completed pre-med coursework in general and organic chemistry, biochemistry, biology, physics, and statistics. After college, I earned a master's degree in Epidemiology from Columbia University.
I have worked in medical research labs at Boston Children's Hospital, Pfizer Inc., and Columbia University Medical Center. I love to share my passion for science and my real-world experience in the lab with my science students. Outside of the lab, I have also worked on clinical research projects in Alzhiemer's, pediatrics, and oncology research.
I have also helped students from 20+ countries around the work apply and earn acceptance to the highest-ranked colleges in the country by developing unique and powerful essays and giving confident and effective interviews.
I began tutoring during high school and have continued 1:1 tutoring (in person and over zoom) as well as classroom teaching for the past six years.

I have experience working with multiple types of research including clinical research, genetics research, anthropological/ethnographic research, and epidemiological research. I use my professional as well as my own academic experiences to help my students apply the concepts they are learning in class to the things they are passionate about in the real world in ways that might not have thought possible!
Although I am not a native speaker, I have ranked highly on the National Spanish Exam at the highest level and performed very highly on the AP Spanish exam as well as the SAT II Spanish subject tests. Additionally, I completed high-level undergraduate coursework in literature and history taught in Spanish at Columbia University where I refined my writing and speaking skills in Spanish. I believe that having learned the language as a student, I have a great understanding of the best ways to explain and understand the material.

I have worked with students ages 5-25 from around the world in essay writing, English, Spanish, health, math, and science. I have also worked with many students who do not speak English as a first language.

I'm a junior in high school and sometimes it can be really hard to connect with a tutor (they can be older and harder to relate to) but Emma was so fun to talk with! Online school is already hard, but online biology makes it so much harder. Over the summer, she helped me prepare for my biology class and now we're doing weekly Zoom check-ins to make sure I'm confident in the material. Emma explains things in a way that make it not only easier for me to understand but also easier to retain. overall she's super nice and has totally helped me with my work.
Emma tutored my 12-year-old in Spanish, and she couldn't have been easier to work with. She was flexible, communicative, and dependable. When my daughter wouldn't understand her method of explaining the first time, Emma would always know another way of breaking down the concept so she would really "get it". And my daughter really loves her tutoring sessions with Emma! Sometimes, I could hear them laughing over video chat from the next room over.
