About Danyang

I am a TCSOL-qualified Mandarin teacher with over 20 years of teaching experience, specialising in GCSE, IGCSE and A-Level Chinese.

I am also a GCSE Mandarin Speaking Examiner and certified HSK Examiner, giving me a detailed understanding of exam requirements, assessment criteria and what students need to do to achieve stronger results.

Over the years, I have worked with students at a wide range of levels — from those building their foundations to high-achieving students aiming for the top grades. This experience allows me to identify quickly where a student is losing marks and which areas will make the greatest difference to their progress.

I have developed my own structured GCSE Chinese programme and teaching materials, which I use and continually refine across students of different abilities.

My approach goes beyond simply covering the syllabus. I focus on helping students build the language, confidence and exam skills they need to perform independently.

I regularly review progress and adjust teaching priorities so that students are not simply completing more exercises, but becoming more accurate, more confident and more effective in their speaking, writing and exam work.

My goal is for every student to understand not only "what to do", but "how to improve"— and to see clear progress towards their exam goals.

Every student starts from a different point, so I tailor lessons around the student's current level, specific learning gaps and exam goals — focusing lesson time on the areas that will make the greatest difference to their progress and results.

I support students following:
* AQA GCSE Chinese
* Pearson Edexcel GCSE Chinese
* Cambridge IGCSE Chinese
* Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Chinese

A-Level Chinese preparation is also available.

A CLEAR LEARNING JOURNEY

Rather than treating each lesson as an isolated session, I build tuition around a clear learning journey:

1. Assess
I first identify the student's current strengths and the areas limiting their progress.

For example, a student may:
* understand Chinese well but struggle to develop speaking answers
* have good vocabulary but make frequent grammatical errors
* write accurately but rely on simple sentence structures
* perform well in class but lose marks through exam technique
* need stronger foundations before progressing to higher-grade language

2. Target
Based on the assessment, I set clear priorities for the next stage of learning.

Rather than trying to improve everything at once, we focus first on the areas most likely to improve confidence, performance and exam results.

This may include developing longer speaking answers, improving grammatical accuracy, strengthening vocabulary or learning how to gain more marks in writing.

This gives students a clear focus and ensures lesson time is spent where it will have the greatest impact.

3. Teach and Apply
Lessons help students actively use the language and skills they are learning. Depending on their needs, we may focus on:

* developing longer, more sophisticated and spontaneous speaking answers
* improving vocabulary, grammar and sentence complexity
* strengthening writing accuracy, range and structure
* developing effective listening and reading strategies
* understanding what examiners are looking for and how to turn stronger language into higher marks
* applying feedback to produce stronger answers independently

I use model answers, targeted questioning, guided practice and independent application so that students learn not only how to improve an answer, but how to produce stronger answers themselves.

4. Review Progress
I regularly review progress and look for clear evidence of development.

For example:

Speaking:
short answers → developed responses → justified opinions → confident use of different tenses and more sophisticated language

Writing:
simple sentences → greater range and accuracy → more complex structures → stronger exam-style responses

Teaching priorities are then adjusted according to what the student needs next.

BETWEEN LESSONS

Students receive targeted homework and relevant lesson materials to reinforce learning and address their individual areas for improvement.

Previous feedback is revisited where appropriate, helping students correct repeated mistakes and apply improvements to future work.

WHO MY LESSONS ARE FOR

My lessons are suitable for students from Year 7 onwards who are studying towards GCSE or IGCSE Chinese, from those building their foundations at the beginning of the course to Year 10 and Year 11 students preparing intensively for mocks and final examinations.

Students may come to me because they are struggling with school Chinese, want to strengthen their foundations, are aiming for a higher grade, need focused support in a particular skill, or want intensive preparation before mocks, speaking exams or final examinations.

Whatever the starting point, I identify what will make the greatest difference and build lessons around clear, achievable progress.

  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

As a Mandarin teacher, I possess fluency in the language owing to my Chinese origins. Having been born and raised in Northern China, I developed a clear and standard pronunciation which proves advantageous during lessons, as it facilitates better comprehension for learners.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

I believe Jackie Chan is a living embodiment of Mandarin culture. Not only is he a talented actor and martial artist, but he also embodies the values of hard work, perseverance, and humility that are so important in Chinese culture.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

"有缘千里来相会" (yǒu yuán qiān lǐ lái xiāng huì) is a beautiful phrase in Mandarin, which means that destiny can bring individuals together no matter how far apart they are. This expression emphasizes the significance of fate and relationships in Chinese culture, including the special bond between a tutor and their student who are brought together for a common purpose:-)
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Mandarin is the most widely spoken language in the world and is the official language of China, which has the second-largest economy in the world. Knowing Mandarin can open up many economic opportunities for business, trade, and investment in China.

Mandarin is becoming an increasingly popular language choice in schools around the world, and learning it can give students an edge in college admissions and future job prospects.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

There are several difficulties in learning Mandarin, including:
    • Tones: Mandarin is a tonal language, which means that the meaning of words can change depending on the tone used to pronounce them. This can be particularly difficult for learners who are not accustomed to distinguishing between different tones.

    • Characters: Mandarin uses Chinese characters, which are completely different from the Roman alphabet used in English. Learning these characters can take a lot of time and effort.
    • Grammar: Mandarin grammar can be challenging for English speakers because the sentence structure and word order are often different from what they are used to.

To help with the learning process, you can:
    • Finding a professional tutor who can provide guidance and feedback throughout the learning process can be invaluable. Tutors can offer personalised instruction and support, helping you overcome obstacles and make progress more quickly.
    • Consistency and persistence are also key, learning a new language takes time and effort, so it's important to practice regularly and stay motivated.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

When I was learning English as a second language, I struggled with differentiating between the words "hear" and "listen." Despite studying grammar rules and vocabulary extensively, it was hard for me to grasp the subtle differences in meaning between these two words.

One day, my English teacher shared an anecdote that helped me fully understand the distinction. She said, "Hearing is simply perceiving sound through your ears, but listening is actively paying attention to what you hear and processing its meaning."

This simple yet powerful explanation taught me that language learning is not just about memorizing technical details like grammar rules and vocabulary. It's about understanding the nuances of communication and developing the ability to interpret and respond appropriately to what we hear. This lesson has stayed with me throughout not only my language learning but also my teaching journey.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

Travel and immersion in a language and culture can be incredibly beneficial for improving language skills. One personal example I can share is that of my son, who was born in the UK and primarily spoke English. However, after spending just one month in China, he made significant progress in his Mandarin abilities. Not only was he able to communicate with my parents for hours on end, but he also used more complex vocabulary and demonstrated a better understanding of Chinese customs and culture.
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

Superprof is a well-established tutoring platform that connects teachers with students. It offers a great user experience, allowing teachers to easily manage their lessons, schedule appointments, and communicate with students. Additionally, Superprof doesn't charge commission fees on tuition for a premium account.

Superprof also has a review system where students can leave feedback and ratings after each lesson, which helps teachers build a strong professional reputation and increase their bookings. For teachers looking to grow their teaching business, Superprof presents an excellent option.
