About Jaime

I graduated from Berklee College of Music in 2016 with a dual degree in Performance, Songwriting and Music Production. I was awarded the Latin American scholarship after my audition to get into Berklee. Prior to my music studies, I got a degree in Business back home in Lima University in Lima-Peru. I have been playing guitar for 20 years and teaching private lessons for about 15 years now. When it comes to guitar lessons the styles I focus on are classical, rock, blues, pop, jazz, folk and fusion. Also teach songwriting, production and mixing. My first step is to talk to the student, to see what they expect from the lessons. After I realize the level the student is in, we can start moving forward and I develop a specific plan for every single person. After that I generally divide the lesson in three parts: theory, technique and repertoire.

  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favorite instrument?

My journey into playing the guitar began unexpectedly at the age of 13, when my mother encouraged me to take it up. At that time, I was an athlete dealing with a significant back injury that limited my mobility. In her wisdom, my mother believed that learning to play a musical instrument would be a beneficial diversion. Her intuition proved to be spot on, as from that very first lesson, my passion for the guitar was ignited, and I never turned away from it.
  • Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

While I have an appreciation for various music genres, it's safe to say that progressive rock resonates with me the most. I have a particular fondness for its incorporation of diverse time signatures and the intricate evolution of songs within this genre.
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

Reflecting on my years of teaching experience, it's clear that students often encounter their greatest challenges when it comes to rhythm. Sensing the beat and executing precise rhythms can prove to be quite a difficult task, especially when working with the guitar.
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

In my view, the most challenging instrument to both play and master is the human voice. When learning to play the guitar, piano, or any other instrument, the teacher typically provides explicit instructions like "play this note" and demonstrates it. However, when it comes to singing, it's an instrument you must deeply feel, and it often takes years of practice before one becomes truly comfortable with their own voice.
  • What are your keys to success?

Two key elements to keep in mind are consistency and enjoyment. While there will always be a portion of practice that demands hard work and may not be as enjoyable, it's equally important to incorporate something you genuinely like into your practice sessions. Whether it's a favorite song you love to play and work on or specific exercises that resonate with you, blending enjoyment with dedication can make your practice sessions more fulfilling.
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

Andy Timmons, Guthrie Govan, and Jeff Beck are all remarkable guitarists, each with their own distinctive styles. Their uniqueness shines through in their playing and the way they communicate their emotions through their instruments. What unites them is not only their extraordinary musical talent but also their intellectual depth. A gathering of these three brilliant minds would result in a captivating and intellectually stimulating experience for me.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

I once had a gig in Boston that turned into one of those days when everything seemed to go awry. Throughout the concert, I encountered a series of mishaps: I broke a string, my pedalboard malfunctioned, and my headphones ceased to work. Essentially, everything essential for a successful performance let me down. In a pinch, I resorted to playing with a borrowed guitar, connecting directly to the amplifier, and improvising on the spot. Although I recall this as a nightmarish show, my bandmates insisted it went well. The key takeaway is to always anticipate the best but prepare for the worst. Strive to be proficient enough that you can adapt to unforeseen circumstances, even if it means performing with someone else's guitar and under less-than-ideal conditions.
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

I began my musical journey a bit later in life, at the age of 13. As a result, I vividly recall every facet of the learning process and the challenges it entails. This firsthand experience allows me to empathize with my students' frustrations as they deal with new concepts. Moreover, I bring a considerable amount of patience to my teaching approach, and I am receptive to feedback, which enables me to tailor my instruction to meet each student's unique needs.
